Supervised canoe and kayak trips down a two-mile stretch of the Los Angeles River in the San Fernando Valley are expected to begin soon as part of a city pilot program that will open part of the waterway to the public.

Los Angeles Conservation Corps filed a request with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in June to allow limited and legal non-motorized water vessels into the river.

A public comment period ended on June 30, and if the request is accepted, experts trained in safety would lead a supervised group of 12 people down the Los Angeles River. The one-way downstream trip would start near the Orange Line busway crossing within the Sepulveda Flood Control Basin and end at Burbank Boulevard.

Opposition to the proposal by the Army Corps is not expected, said Bruce Saito, executive director for the Los Angeles Conservation Corps. Public interest has surged since news of the program spread.

While the trips are set to start on July 8, Saito said it may be a few days after, since some details still need to be worked out. The Los Angeles Conservation Corps will put up a separate link with more information on its lacorps.org website.

"We're getting besieged by calls," Saito said. "It's really great. It's encouraging that people care, but we want people to be patient."

Saito said his organization worked with several groups including Friends of the Los Angeles River and with Los Angeles Councilman

Ed Reyes. The opportunity to propose such a program came after U.S. EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson last year described the 48-mile urban waterway as navigable, a term that paves the way for the river to be protected under the Clean Water Act.

The overall goal of the supervised trips will be to raise awareness about the river and its history and future.

One to two trips in canoes and sit-on-top kayaks will be planned for Saturdays and Sundays, for $50 a person. Some youth programs will have the opportunity to participate for free on Fridays. Participants will be fitted for equipment before heading on the tour. The trip will include educational talks and a brief boating clinic.

"This is a way to celebrate the river and to get people involved in its rich history," Saito said. "The river is a city treasure."

William and Kate Continue Canadian Tour By Planting And Cooking

Will and Kate continue their tour of Canada by planting trees and learning to cook

Photo: INFdaily.com

Prince William and Duchess Catherine are continuing their Canadian tour by taking part in several different activities.

On Friday, the couple planted an Eastern Hemlock tree in the shadow of the Pin Oak planted by William?s parents. Prince Charles and Princess Diana planted the tree on June 21, 1983, which happened to be William?s first birthday. The species of the tree is native to Canada and is supposed to serve as a symbol of their love for 800 years. These two trees are also surrounded by red oaks planted by other members of the Royal Family.

Following the tree planting, the couple took a cooking class Saturday at the Institut de tourisme et d?hotellerie du Quebec. They cooked a lobster soufflé, which is apparently very complicated to make. They both took the lessons seriously and focused on learning to make different dishes, but were able to relax and enjoy the meal after it was prepared.

Well, I guess if that?s their version of fun then good for them. Who knows what kind of crazy stuff they?ll get into next in Canada.

Elizabeth Hurley doesn't worry about opinions

Elizabeth Hurley is happy to try new things and doesn't worry about what other people think of her.

Elizabeth Hurley no longer cares what people think.

The 46-year-old beauty - who revealed earlier this year her marriage to Arun Nayar was over after it emerged she had been secretly dating former cricketer Shane Warne - finds getting older "liberating" because she is more open to new things.

She said: "It helps to be open to new things. Some close off and become more insular as they grow older, for me it's the other way. I care less what people think. It's liberating."

Elizabeth - who has a nine-year-old son Damian with former boyfriend Steve Bing - believes it is more important to take care of her appearance now she is getting older as she doesn't want to look like a "bag lady".

She added in an interview with Grazia magazine: "As you get older it's the grooming - unkempt doesn't work.

"At 19 you can have buttons hanging off and stringy hair, but as we get older we look like bag ladies if we let things slide."

Charlene Wittstock put fears that she was going to be a runaway bride to rest for good as she wed Prince Albert of Monaco in a religious ceremony on Saturday.

A day after their civil ceremony, the Rhodesian-born Olympian walked down the aisle on the arm of her father in a dazzling off-white silk Duchesse Giorgio Armani Privé dress with a long train and long veil made from off-white silk tulle. The dress was embellished with flowery embroidery, crafted with stones in gold shades, along with Swarovski crystals and mother of pearl teardrops in white and gold hues.

Albert was wearing the cream-colored summer uniform of the palace guards, as well as three medals, including the French Legion of Honor and the Order of the Grimaldi.

As he slipped the ring on his bride's finger, the prince winked and she giggled, looking relaxed. The two exchanged vows in French, which Wittstock studied intensively for a month at the Institut de Francais.

Because of the couple's large guest list, the ceremony took place in the courtyard of the prince's royal palace, rather than the cathedral where his parents Rainer III and Grace Kelly exchanged vows in 1956.

After the couple walked outside of the palace, they got into their Lexus hybrid and were driven to the tiny St. Devote chapel where, according to tradition, the princess leaves her wedding bouquet. It was here that Charlene lost her composure and began weeping briefly ? as if she were overcome by the heat and emotion.

"It was one of the most beautiful weddings I've ever seen," Gildo Pastor, 44, a longtime friend of Albert and a member of one of the most prominent families in Monaco told PEOPLE. "They have a wonderful future ahead of them."

Becoming a Princess

For the ceremony, Wittstock, 33, wore a dress designed by Giorgio Armani, although her father, Michael Wittstock, tells Paris-Match magazine that Charlene wasn't always fashion conscious.

"I've seen her turn into a princess there," he said of her time in Monaco. "Before, she was jogging all the time. Now, she's acquired a taste for fashion and become a beautiful woman."

Wittstock grew up in Zimbabwe and spent most of her childhood pursuing her Olympic swimming career and playing with animals. "We'd have weekends by the side of the river Gwai. There were wild animals, elephants, giraffes," says her father, a Johannesburg-based Xerox executive. "Charlene would go riding. She was a real tomboy. Always running everywhere; always covered with dust and dirt."

Sounds like she'll be right at home when the couple departs for their honeymoon in South Africa.

DVD Extra: 'The Lord of the Rings' extended edition

By Steve Jones, USA TODAY

Ten years after the release of the first film in director Peter Jackson's beloved The Lord of the Rings trilogy, the franchise based on the novels of J.R.R. Tolkien gets a Hi-Def video treatment that is as expansive as Middle-earth itself.

Sean Astin and Elijah Wood are on a quest to destroy The One Ring in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The 15-disc boxed set The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy: Extended Edition ? Blu-ray (2001-2003, Warner Bros., PG-13, $120) restores nearly two hours of deleted scenes to 2001's The Fellowship of the Ring, 2002's The Two Towers and 2003's The Return of the King. The running time for the three films alone exceeds 11 hours, and there is an additional 26 hours of bonus material.

The fantasy tale tells the story of the hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) who battles to save his world from the evil Dark Lord Sauron. He and a band of heroes undertake a treacherous journey through a war-torn Middle-earth, a world peopled by all manner of humans, dwarfs, elves, wizards and other strange creatures, to find and destroy Sauron's greatest source of power, The One Ring.

Tolkien's vision is brought to life by groundbreaking special effects and an all-star cast that includes Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Ian Holm and Sean Bean.

The films were wildly successful critically and commercially. They earned a combined 30 Oscar nominations and won 17. The Return of the King won all 11 for which it was nominated (tying Ben-Hur and Titanic for most received). The movies were all filmed concurrently in Jackson's native New Zealand at a combined cost of $281 million. They wound up earning $1 billion at the box office in the USA and $3 billion worldwide.

In the boxed set, five discs each are devoted to the films. The movies themselves are split into two parts on separate Blu-ray discs, and three DVD discs of bonus material accompany the movies. Each gets a feature-length behind-the-scenes documentary created by filmmaker Costa Botes (Saving Grace) on the sets of each movie.

Other discs feature commentaries by the director, cast and crew members, discussions on how the screenplay was developed from the books, the creation of the elaborate sets, how the hundreds of special effects were integrated, and an interactive Middle-earth atlas.

Jackson is not done with Tolkien and neither are many of the actors from the Rings movies. In March, the director began filming The Hobbit as a two-part epic prequel to the trilogy: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit:There and Back Again. Filming again is taking place in New Zealand. The movies are scheduled to be released in December 2012 and December 2013, respectively. Martin Freeman stars as Bilbo Baggins and Richard Armitage stars as Thorin Oakenshield. Wood, McKellan, Bloom, Weaving, Holm, Lee and Blanchett will reprise their roles.

Maria Shriver to Divorce Arnold Schwarzenegger

After months of hemming and hawing - even after his love child with Mildred Patricia Baena came to light - Maria Shriver has filed for divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger, citing irreconcilable differences on the paperwork.

The couple has been married 25 years and has no prenup.

Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger Pic

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver will split around $400 million.

The official date of separation is not known, but despite Arnold's infidelity, Shriver was reportedly torn over whether to follow through with the divorce.

As recently as mid-June, Arnold wasn't giving up on reconciliation.

Shriver is asking for spousal support and for joint custody of their minor children, 17-year-old Patrick Arnold Shriver Schwarzenegger and 13-year-old Christopher Sargent Shriver Schwarzenegger. Their other two kids are over 18.

The division of property is yet to be determined. Because there is no prenup, under California law, all earnings and other property acquired during the marriage is considered community property, which means a 50/50 split.

Since the couple has been married for a quarter century, it's likely that all their property will be considered communal, even if Arnold's net worth is higher.

In any case, their divorce will never go to trial and will be settled out of court after what will surely be extensive negotiations on behalf of their attorneys.

The terms will also be confidential.

Plaintiff: Ace PR -- accused of doing a CRAPPY job.

Strap on your rhinestone pants ... 'cause this one's about to get NASTY!!!

Ballas has just been hit with a summons to appear in L.A. County Small Claims Court -- because Ace PR claims the "Dancing with the Stars" pro never forked over $2,637.75 he owed the company after he fired them back in September.

According to legal docs, obtained by TMZ, Ace claims Ballas agreed to pay them a "30 day termination fee" when he signed his contract ... which is basically severance pay.

But sources close to Ballas tell us ... the dancer believes he doesn't owe Ace a dime, because they breached the contract by doing such a terrible job.

Ballas and Ace PR are set to face off in small claims court on July 8.

Stay tuned ...
